Janáček, Leoš (1854~1928)

Janáček, a major Czech composer, was born in Moravia, as the tenth child of a poor schoolteacher. He left home at a young age and participated in a choir of Abbey of St. Thomas in Brno, the capital of Moravia. He graduated as a self-supporting student. He then continued his studies at the Prague Organ School, the Leipzig Conservatory, and the Vienna Conservatory. In 1881, he founded an organ school in Brno and was its director for 40 years. From 1881 to 1888, he was a conductor for the Philharmonic Society. He worked in his hometown Moravia, including teaching composition at the newly built Prague Conservatory in Brno.
He rose to fame as a composer following the premiere of his opera “Jenufa” in 1904.
Within the next 10 years, he reached the height of his creative activities after presenting masterpieces such as “The Makropoulos Affair”, “From the House of the Dead”, “Katya Kabanova”, “Mr. Brouček’s Excursion to the Moon”, “Mr. Brouček’s Excursion to the 15th Century”, and “The Cunning Little Vixen”.
Several composers created their own realm of music based on their native countries’ folk songs. Likewise, Janacek’s works also was based on his widened researches on Moravian folklores. These researches achieved originality through the mutual development between the songs and the music of Western Europe, rather than just through the decoration of exotic sounding melodies. His music reveals pentatonic scale, impressionism, and the influences of Smetana and Dvorak. The subtle rhythms, where the meters are not easily recognizable, provide the work a sense of mystery. That style is an example of frequent meter changes that are often present in Moravian folk songs.
Janáček showed his special talent in operas. His operas use music for technical purposes to increase the dramatic effect. His major works are “Katya Kabanova”, “Mr. Brouček’s Excursion to the Moon”, “Mr. Brouček’s Excursion to the 15th Century”, and “From the House of the Dead”. Additionally, he incorporated his own musical color in almost every genre including religious works, solo pieces, and chamber music compositions.
His other major works are “Violin Sonata No.3”, “Youth”(a wind sextet), a string quartet, “A Secret Letter”(vocal), and “The Diary of One Who Disappeared”(a song cycle). Along with his orchestral works “Taras Bulba” and “Sinfonietta”, his “Glagolitic Mass”, which gave life to the intonation of the native language and was written in the Slavic language, is extremely well known.
Janáček’s compositional activities were often based on several 19th century literatures on realism. Critics thus lauded him “The Mussorgsky of Moravia”. He developed unique styles with his originalities in virtually all elements, such as musical colors, modulation, and rhythm.
