 Schumann, Robert Alexander

Schumann grew up while spending in the cultivation of literature as much as music, as his father was a bookseller and his mother was a music lover. Schumann is generally known as a composer, but he was also active in his role as a music critic and as a founder of a music magazine. It is said that he had been largely influenced by his parents in developing such ability.

He already began composing at age 11 and dreamt of becoming a musician. However, his father died in 1826 and at his mother’s suggestion, he entered a university in Leipzig to study law. Yet he met a well-known teacher named Wieck in Leipzig and studied piano and music theory. He did not have a major composition teacher but continued his composition studies. He injured his finger during his early 20s and had to give up his wishes to become a pianist; he instead began his seriously activities as a composer and music critic. He wrote several great piano works such as “Papillons”, “Etudes After Paganini Caprices”, “Carnaval”, and the “Symphonic Etudes”. He published a music magazine called “Neue Zeitschrift für Musik” with Knorr, Schuncke, and Wieck. The magazine introduced new composers such as Brahms and
Schumann himself, and it caused a new sensation in romantic music.

After his mother’s death, he developed his love for Clara, the daughter of his piano teacher and the co-publisher of “Neue Zeitschrift für Musik”. The attempts of marriage of the perhaps the most famous couple in the history of music were met with serious problems because of Wieck’s opposition. Despite encountering many obstacles including the lawsuits, the couple eventually succeeded in achieving their goals in 1840. At around this time, Schumann, who had focused exclusively on compositions for piano, began to devote himself to works for voices. Over a half of his vocal compositions, including “Myrthen”, and the song cycle “Liederkreis” (based on poems by Eichendorff) were written during this time. He then presented his symphonies and chamber pieces shortly thereafter. At this point, his composition activities, filled with romantic lyricism, started to blossom.

As the stories above indicate, Schumann left many works in all genres. He especially proved his talents in works for solo piano and for voices. While some of his works are in the sonata form, most of the compositions were program music that contained poetic expression. Schumann was prominent for maintaining lied forms that Schubert had pioneered and for producing beautiful and wonderful works through the harmonious encounter of poems and music

His major masterpieces are the opera, “Genoveva”, the four symphonies (such as the “Spring” and the “Rhenish”), and the piano works such as the concerto, the “Carnaval”, the “Fantasiestücke”, the “Symphonic Etudes”, and the “Scenes from childhood”. His songs are also beloved pieces among his several compositions. He also authored major writings such as the “Gesammelte Schriften über Musik und Musiker” and the “Schumanns Jugendbriefe”.

He had been in poor health since his youth. It is said that he revealed signs of mental disorder and melancholia in 1843, only a few years after he had turned 30. Ironically, many composers created master works during the time of their debilitating illness and unfavorable circumstances. Schumann, too, began to actively write a number of masterpieces since then. However, in 1854, Schumann threw himself into the Rhine River after suffering from a delusion but was saved. He was then taken to an insane asylum, where he remained under treatment for two years until his death in the spring of 1856, at age 46.
