Debussy, Claude Acchille (1862~1918)

Debussy is one of the most representative composers of the 20th century and the creator of the impressionist music. The art of impressionism, which captures an instant impression from external sources such as painting, was not intended for expressions but for impressions. Such idea was also incorporated into special and unprecedented kind of music pieces by the genius composer named Debussy, who combined the French lyricism.
Debussy’s father, who owned a ceramic trading company, wanted to send his son to the Navy. But due to the suggestion from Marie Mauté de Fleurville, who heard Debussy’s remarkable piano performance, Debussy entered the Paris Conservatoire at the young age of 11, where he studied at for 11 years. While a student there, he was invited by Nadezhda Von Meck, the patroness of Tchaikovsky, to go to Moscow. It is said that when he listened to the music of Russian Nationalist School and the Gypsy improvisations, the performances interested him because their musical styles differed from those he had experienced before.
In 1884, he published his Cantata “L'Enfant prodigue” and won Prix de Rome, which was the most honorable prize for composers. This helped his studies in Rome afterwards. However, the stay in Rome was very wearisome for Debussy and the few works he composed during this time as a requirement were not well received. After the tiring stay in Rome, he went back to Paris and the city opened doors for the new worlds of his creation. In Paris, poets and painters gathered together every night in S. Mallarme’s house to discuss new art. Debussy was always attracted by “new” things and was burning with the desire to create.
He highly praised Wagner at first and later Mussorgsky. During Exposition Universelle, he encountered Eastern music such as Javanese or Cambodian music. He began to have his eyes open to exotic sentiments. He absorbed these unconventional and new elements and combined them with his natural talents. He eventually did away with systematic musical styles previously dominated by melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. He instead started to develop his own compositional styles.
New keys (or harmonies) were necessary to employ new kinds of feelings. Thus, he began to use various kinds of scales and bold harmonies in many of his works. His major works include “Nocturne”, “Three Symphonic Sketches”, “Image”, ”La Mer”, and “Children’s Corner” for piano, and string quartets. His “Prèlude á l'après-midi d'un faune”, completed in 1894 based on the poem by Mallarme, announced the beginning of new music (since Wagner) with the use of special harmonies and forms. His “Pellèas et Mèlisande” is a masterpiece written in his maturity of compositions.
Debussy created a realm of his own musical world by challenging tradition and attempting to use unprecedented and new ways. Stravinsky once said, “The musicians of my generation and I myself, owe the most to Debussy”. He died in 1918, when Paris, the city he loved, was in the center of ruins.
