폴란드의 음악을 대표하는 작곡가이자 일찍이 현대음악의 거장으로 인정받은 펜데레츠키는 크라코프음악원에서 아르투르 말라프스키와 스타니슬라프 비에초비츠를 사사하며 음악적 기반을 다졌다.

그는 제2차 세계대전 이후 유럽 음악계에서 경이적인 반응을 불러일으키며 등장하였다. 1959년 제3회 바르샤바의 가을 페스티벌에서 처음 연주된 10개의 악기와 낭독 및 소프라노를 위한 '스트로페’와 ‘방사’, ‘다윗의 시편’으로 많은 관심을 모으며 폴란드 작곡가 협회의 젊은 작곡가를 위한 콩쿠르에서 1위를 거머쥐었다. 1960년 관현악과 타악기를 위한 ‘아나클라시스’ 및 52개 현악기에 의한 ‘히로시마 희생자에게 바치는 애가’ 등을 통하여 작곡가로서 그만의 독자적인 작풍을 확립하였다. 1961년에는 48개의 현악기에 의한 ‘폴리모르피아’를 작곡하였으며, 오케스트라를 위한 ‘형광’은 도나우에싱엔 페스티벌에서 한스 로스바우트의 지휘와 남서독 방송 교향악단의 연주로 초연되며 절찬을 받았다. 1962년 현악 합주와 테이프 레코드를 위한 ‘캐논’과 3부 합창을 위한 ‘성모애가’를, 1963년에 바이올린 협주곡을 발표하였고, 그의 현악사중주 제1번은 ‘바르토크의 6개의 현악 사중주 이후 최고의 작품’이라는 평가를 받기도 하였다. 1967년에는 그간의 작품을 바탕으로 비후리 시벨리우스 음악상을 수여받으며 작곡가로서의 명성을 한층 드높였다.

펜데레츠키의 작곡 경향은 그의 작품에서 알 수 있듯이 몇 단계에 걸쳐 변화해왔는데, 먼저 말라프스키에게 바치는 ‘비명’과 현악합주를 위한 ‘방사’와 합창과 타악기를 위한 ‘다윗의 시편’ 등 1950년대 작곡된 초기 작품들은 안톤 베베른을 연상하게 한다. 인상주의적 경향과 표현주의적 경향을 모두 답습하고 있지만 그렇다고 견고한 조직을 버리지도 않고 있음이 드러난다. 후기로 갈수록 그의 음악은 보수적인 경향을 보이며 낭만시대의 정서까지 보여주고 있는데, 특히 1970년대 중반에서 1980년대 초반까지의 작품에서는 이러한 낭만적 정서가 가장 강하게 드러나며, 이 시기를 거쳐 1980년대 이후 ‘폴란드 레퀴엠’과 오페라 ‘검은 마스크’와 같은 걸작들이 완성된다.

그는 세련되고 능숙한 관현악법으로 광대한 편성의 작품들에서 독특한 음향을 만들어냈으며 미분음, 클러스터, 글리산도, 하모닉스 등 거의 모든 부분에 걸친 기법을 재해석하여 사용하였다. 그중에서도 ‘히로시마 희생자에게 바치는 애가’와 혼성 합창, 현악합주, 타악기에 의한 ‘시간과 고요의 차원’, 현악사중주는 뛰어난 현악기 사용법으로 현악기 탐구에 관한 새로운 방향을 제시한 명작이다. 이외에도 그만의 독특한 대위법을 보여준 ‘다윗의 시편’, ‘성모애가’를 비롯하여 ‘아침기도’, ‘성모찬가’, ‘드 프로푼디스’, ‘누가 수난곡’, 아우슈비츠 수용소 희생자의 추모를 위한 ‘진노의 날’ 등이 있으며, 1991년에는 대한민국 정부의 위촉으로 광복절을 위한 교향곡 제5번 ‘한국’을 작곡하였으며, 이듬해에 펜데레츠키의 지휘와KBS교향악단의 연주로 초연되었다.

펜데레츠키는 조지타운대학과 글래스고대학, 차이코프스키 국립 모스크바 음악원, 로체스터대학, 북경중앙음악학원, 듀케인대학을 비롯한 보르도, 마드리드, 포즈난 등지의 다양한 대학에서 명예 박사 또는 명예 교수직을 임명받았다. 또한 런던왕립음악대학과 빈 음악협회, 홍콩연예학원, 산타체칠리아국립음악원, 스웨덴왕립음악원, 베를린예술대학 등에서 명예 회원으로 임명되기도 하였다.


폴란드의 전통을 따른 그만의 개성과 음악의 새로운 소재를 능숙하게 다루며 세계인들을 감동적인 음악 세계로 이끌어간 크시슈토프 펜데레츠키는 음악사의 정점에선 전설적인 인물이다.

Penderecki was given violin and piano lessons at an early age and was admitted to the Kraków Conservatory at the age of 18, studying at the same time philosophy, art history and literary history and from 1954 composition at the Kraków State Academy of Music with Artur Malawski and Stanislaw Wiechowicz.

In 1959, Penderecki's three works ‘Strophes’, ‘Emanations’ and ‘Psalms of David’ won first prizes in the 2nd Competition of Young Polish Composers of the Composers' Union. A year later, his piece ‘Anaklasis’ for 42 string instruments, premiered by the Südwestfunk Orchestra under the direction of Hans Rosbaud at the Donaueschingen Festival, was celebrated by the press. With these works and others following in rapid succession, such as ‘Dimensions of Time and Silence’, ‘Threnody’, ‘Polymorphia’, ‘Fluorescences’, ‘Dies Irae’ and ‘Stabat Mater’ for three mixed choruses a cappella performed for the first time in 1966 at the Cathedral of Münster, Penderecki laid the foundations for his international reputation as a composer. For ‘the St. Luke Passion’, Penderecki was awarded the Great Arts Award of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1966 and the Prix Italia in 1967. In the same year, he was also awarded the Wihuri Sibelius Prize.

From 1966 to 1968, during teaching at the Essen Folkwang Hochschule, he began his intensive work on his first opera ‘The Devils of Loudon’, successfully performed at theatres throughout the world as were the three following operas ‘Paradise Lost’, ‘Die Schwarze Maske’ and ‘Ubu Rex’. In 1968, he received a scholarship of the DAAD in Berlin and awarded the Prize of the Union of Polish Composers in 1970. From 1973 to 1978 he was professor at the Yale University and with extended concert tours all over the world, Penderecki rapidly acquired an international reputation even as a conductor of both his own compositions and works of other composers.

Other prizes were awarded to Penderecki for his other 5 symphonies, small-scale orchestral compositions, solo concertos, chamber music works and numerous vocal works are the Prix Arthur Honegger, the Sibelius Prize of the Wihouri Foundation and the National Prize of Poland, the Premio Lorenzo Magnifico and the University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, among others. In 1998, he was honoured with the Composition Award of the Promotion Association of the European Industry and Trade, conferred upon him on the occasion of the Penderecki Festival in Kraków. In 1999, he received the Music Award of the City of Duisburg and received the Cannes Classical Award as "Living Composer of the Year" in 2000. In 2001, he received the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, and in 2002, the Romano Guardini Prize of the Catholic Academy in Bavaria.

Since 1990, he has been holder of the Grand Cross for Distinguished Services of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and Chevalier de Saint Georges. In 1992, he received the Austrian Medal for Science and Art. In 1993, the Institute for Advanced Study at the Indiana University Bloomington conferred upon him the Distinguished Citizen Fellowship; in the same year he was awarded the Prize of the International Music Council UNESCO for Music and the Order of Cultural Merit of the Principality of Monaco. In 1995 and 1996, he was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In 1998, the American Academy of Arts and Letters conferred upon him the Foreign Honorary Membership; in the same year he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and was appointed to the Honorary Board of the Vilnius Festival in 1999. On 5 January 2003 Penderecki was given the freedom of his native town Dębica, and the very same month received the Eduardo M. Torner Medal of the Conservatorio de Música del Principado Asturias during his stay in Oviedo, Spain and was appointed honorary director of the choir of the Prince of Asturias Foundation and honorary president of the cultural association Apoyo a la Creación Musical. In 2004, Penderecki has been awarded the Praemium Imperiale and in 2006, he became both Member of the Three Star Order in Latvia and the Order of the White Eagle. In 2008, the President of Finland, Tarja Halonen awarded Krzysztof Penderecki the Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland.


Penderecki has received honorary doctorates and professorships from numerous universities, such as the Georgetown University, University of Glasgow, Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Beijing Conservatoire, Duquesne University, the universities of Rochester, Bordeaux, Leuwen, Belgrad, Madrid, and Poznań, as well as honorary memberships from the Royal Academy of Music, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde Vienna, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien, the Akademie der Künste and the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes.
