'The inheritance of music from great composers'

The 12th Seoul International Music Festival 2020 presents “The Great Masters” series, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.

This year, our festival’s main theme is Beethoven. We are excited to present you with a great opportunity to explore the diversity and depth of Beethoven’s music through his violin sonatas, symphonies, concertos, and various versions of chamber music. We have added his early work and different arrangement versions to our program for a new and interesting experience. We will also introduce the works of other Great Masters encompassing the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern and Contemporary eras. The SIMF hopes to promote the value of music in this age of Corona Virus through their music.

We open by commemorating the death of the great maestro Penderecki, who passed away this past March, in the opening performance “Beethoven and Penderecki” through his 'Chaconne'. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, which is known as the ‘king of concertos’, and Symphony No.4, which embodies the liveliness and warmth of Beethoven’s music most impressively, is a gift from the muses to all the revived performances. The second performance “The Immortal Composer” presents Beethoven’s various chamber music all in one stage and is performed by the best singers, wind and string musicians. The third performance, which is our largest performance, includes Symphony No.6 in F Major and the arias of Beethoven’s only opera 'Fidelio'. Also, Mendi Mengjiqi’s 'Abandoned Ones for String' will world-premiered. This piece is written for the abandoned and pained ones with hopes to console the pain of today’s world through music.

In our closing performance, Ensemble Opus presents Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No.4 rearranged for flute quartet, and The Sextet for Horns and String Quartet. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.5, which includes harpsichord cadenza, will be played by Pianist Jiyoung Moon who plays harpsichord for the first time. 'Sonata Amabile', a composition by Taeksu Kim, is an extraordinary piece commissioned by the SIMF. It is filled with enriching expressions and beautiful melody.

The Great Masters are not merely caged inside history.
Their inheritance is what made our lives today, and still gives us hope and courage to move forth towards the future.
