2018 Seoul International Music Festival Eve Concert

Victor & Luis del Valle duo, youthful performance.

The “first” experience for anything leave a powerful impression. Seoul International Music Festival’s eve concert, marking the ‘first’ event of the festival also holds a special meaning, as it is a place of celebrating the 10 year history and solidifying the future direction of SIMF. The dreams and ideals of Seoul International Music Festival will be inherent within in the eve concert.

The eve concert is free and it will be running based on a no-show campaign, a project SIMF started in 2017 in order to improve concert etiquette, and to prevent no-show audience for other potential audience. The no-show campaign asks audience to pay the reservation fee in advance and gives back the fee upon your arrival at the concert. The SIMF hopes to share the happiness of classical music with more people.

The SIMF has continuously discovered and introduced young and new talented musicians in Korea, and this year, they have selected Victor & Luis del Valle, the piano duo, as the artists for the eve concert. Victor & Luis, who made their first visit to Korea through SIMF, are star piano duos who have won first prize and the special audience award at the 54th ARD International Music Competition. They are known for active stage manner and youthful and fresh performance.

Piano is an instrument that plays multiple chords at once and jumps through broad ranges of key, suitable for performing symphonies and opera arrangements. The piano ensemble of this brother duo expands the expression and the potential of piano music. We are certain that the audience will remember the late autumn day of November through this visually and acoustically pleasing concert.

The eve concert is packed with popular programs for everyone to enjoy, but is also organized with meaningful, rich repertoires. Our program takes the audience through the historical changes of piano duo genre from the 18th century to the 20th century, as well as its regional changes across Western Europe and Eastern Europe. The flow of the program, going from Mozart, Debussy, Lutoslawski, Schubert and Ravel, invites the audience to experience colorful changes and various forms of piano duo pieces, including educational pieces written for amateur players, pieces written for entertainment purposes, pieces arranged from other original works, and pieces written for ballet.

DUO Víctor & Luis del Valle

Since they won Top Prize and Special Audience Prize in the 54th ARD International Music Competition (Munich, 2005), Víctor and Luis del Valle (Vélez-Málaga, Spain) have soon been acclaimed as one of Europe's most distinguished chamber music ensembles.

Brothers Víctor and Luis del Valle have made a recording of music by spanish composer Tomás Marco in collaboration with the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra, and also have recorded works by the Galician composer José Arriola with the orchestra Real Filharmonía de Galicia. Furthermore, they have made recordings for RNE (National Radio from Spain) "Radio Clásica", BR (Bavarian Radio) and SWR (Sud West Radio) and for the SONY MUSIC-Spain. In this 2016 they are on an concert tour presenting the repertoire of their new CD “Impulse”, recorded at Auditorio Manuel de Falla de Granada by IBS CLASSICAL.

Involved in the approach of classical music to the general public, the Del Valle Duo created in 2014, with the andalousian singer Pasión Vega, the show "2 Pianos con Pasión", a music-theater fusion that was performed with great success on a tour of more than twenty concerts throughout the Spanish geography.

From 2008, Victor and Luis del Valle combine their artistic activities with their teaching career in Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid and Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón. 2018 SIMF Opening Concert
Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the personality of Japan

“A fearless player with technique to burn”
- The New York Times, U.S

Eiji Oue, honorary conductor of Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra known for ‘extraordinary interpretation’ and ‘humor’

Jiyeong Mun, pianist following the footsteps of the piano empress, Martha Argerich.

The opening concert of Seoul International Music Festival is intended to be a cultural exchange program. Japan Philharmonic Orchestra played the works of a Korean composer Yi-sang Yoon at their annual concert in Suntory Hall, Tokyo, and alternatively, they will be performing the works of Japanese composer Toyama in the upcoming opening Seoul concert on November 2nd.

Japan Philharmonic, established in Tokyo, June, 1956, is one of the leading orchestras in Japan with 60 years of history, known for various repertoires and unique performance style. They will be visiting Korea for the first time for this festival.

They started the “Japan Phil Series” to promote works of Japanese composers and chose to play pieces with a deep sense of Japanese culture. Yuzo Toyama’s , which marks the beginning of our festival, reflects the relaxing spirit of Japan and resembles the mood of a Japanese animation soundtrack, while applying the structure of Japanese traditional folk music and Northern sea songs of fishermen.

Under the theme of ‘Unity through music’ each year, Seoul International Music Festival has interacted with other nations through classical music. This year, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Seoul International Music Festival, we take this step of unity with Japan. The participating artists hopes to achieve a softened relationship between Korea and Japan through classical music.

Jiyeong Mun is the Korean artist collaborating with Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. She has won the 2014 Swiss Geneva International Competition and 2015 Busoni international concert, catching the attention of the music world at once. Her natural style of performance adds liveliness to her music.

The SIMF aims to introduce young artists of Korea through such collaborations, in hopes of enabling talented musicians to become more elegant performers through experiencing global stages. We believe that Jiyeong Mun’s growth and breakthrough as a potential world class musician will be evident in her Brahm’s piano concerto.

Japan Philharmonic hints their future direction by playing the music of Brahms, a composer filled with musical contemplation. Brahms contemplated symphonic structures and tried hard not to lose the balance between form and expression. Similarly, Japan Philharmonic also aims to both preserve the 60 years of tradition and at the same time grow towards the future.

ORCHESTRA JAPAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Japan Philharmonic Orchestra's history began in Tokyo in June 1956. Akeo WATANABE played an important role in founding the orchestra and became its first Principal Conductor. With a wide repertoire and its unique performing style, JPO has soon become one of the leading orchestras in Japan. Igor MARKEVITCH, Charles MUNCH, Jean FOURNET and many other world-class conductors have conducted the Orchestra. JPO had a very successful USA-Canada tour in 1964, making a dramatic breakthrough in just ten years from its founding. JPO also made an appearance to the renowned Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2011 with Alexander LAZAREV, one of Russia’s great maestros who led JPO as Chief Conductor for 8 years from 2008 through 2016, making a significant first step to develop good relationships with Asian countries. In recent years, JPO has received a number of great reviews for its high quality performances.

From its founding, JPO started a commission series “Japan Phil Series” with wide variety of Japanese composers. Forty works have been premiered as of 2016, some of them now being regarded as regularly-performed repertoire, and the series has been highly rated as a commission system that is unprecedented in Japan’s music history. JPO is now aiming for further development while preserving its 60 years of history and tradition.

CONDUCTOR Eiji Oue

Renowned for his ‘extraordinary interpretations’ (La Nacion) and his ‘trademark good humour […] and great energy’ (BackTrack), Eiji Oue has conducted many of the world’s top orchestras throughout his career, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and the Munich Philharmonic. Oue is currently Conductor Laureate of both the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, having served as its Music Director from 2003-2011, and the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Hanover, following an eleven year tenure as Principal Guest Conductor (1998-2009).

Passionate about musical education and stewarding the next generation of musicians, Oue is Professor of Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, a post he’s held since 2000. Amongst his many honours and awards are the 1980 Koussevitzky Prize at Tanglewood and both first prize and the Hans Harin Gold Medal at the 1981 Salzburg Mozarteum conducting competitions. In November 2005 he received the Praetorius Music Prize from the state of Lower Saxony and the Lower Saxony Order of Merit in 2009.

SOLOIST Piano Jiyeong Mun

‘I have rediscovered in her a naturalness of musicality that I thought had disappeared.
’ - Jörg Demus, the president of the 60th International Busoni Competition jury

Pianist Jiyeong Mun won the Geneva International Competition in Switzerland in 2014 and subsequently won the Busoni International Competition in Italy in 2015. Since then, she has gained a reputation as a young musician and pianist who receives the most attention through accompanied performances with Korean and international leading orchestras and through piano recitals on the world stage.

From early on, Jiyeong Mun has proven her ability by continually winning the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in 2009, the Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists in Germany in 2012 and the Takamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan in 2014. Seoul International Music Festival, A marvelous stage of four strings
Daniel Müller-Schott, the Master of Cello

“A fearless player with technique to burn”
- The New York Times, U.S

His powerful interpretation and attractive personality make his concerts especially memorable.

Daniel Müller-Schott is a cellist and a true artist of the 21st century. He has received various awards including Diapason d’Or, the Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Strad Selection and the BBC Music Magazine’s “CD of the month”, and he has performed with New York Orchestra, Chicago Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic and Gewandhausorchestra Leipzig.

The audience will be able to experience the true romance of cello music without accompaniment through this concert. While classical music gained more attention after the Classical and Romantic era, cello music without accompaniment became more obsolete. Daniel’s cello melody, played without any ensembles, will allow the audience to experience a new dimension of the cello music without accompaniment.

Daniel Müller-Schott, making a leap from being a “Classical music star” to “Classical maestro”, is focused on discovering new pieces and expanding his cello repertoire by collaborating with composers. In October 2013 the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation awarded the Aida Stucki Prize to Daniel Müller-Schott as an acknowledgement of “his outstanding contribution to the cello repertoire.” Sir André Previn and Peter Ruzicka have both dedicated a cello concerto to him, and Sebastian Currier composed a cello sonata for Daniel Müller-Schott. His numerous premiers reflect his passion for cello. He has premiered Previn’s cello concerto with the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra and Gustavo Gimeno, and premiered Mustonen’s Sonata for Cello and Piano at the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg.

Daniel Muller-Schott is also known for his love for ‘Bach’. In 2000, he chose the Six Suites for Cello Solo for Bach’s jubilee for his first CD album. This is another reason to anticipate his interpretation of Bach.

Daniel Müller-Schott has a keen interest in awakening young people’s enthusiasm for classical music. He is supporting the new generation of musicians by participating in the “Rhapsody in School” project in an honorary capacity and teaching masterclasses in Europe, the US, Asia and Australia, despite his busy schedule. This concert sends a message of hope from Daniel to many musicians and pre-musicians out there.

CELLIST Daniel Muller-Schott

Daniel Müller-Schott was born in Munich. He studied under Walter Nothas, Heinrich Schiff and StevenIsserlis and benefited early on from personal sponsorship by Anne-Sophie Mutter as the holder of a scholarship from her foundation. Through this support, Daniel Müller-Schott was taught privately byMstislav Rostropovich for a year. In 1992, at the age of fifteen, he first caused a sensation internationally by winning the 1st Prize at the Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians.

All over the world Daniel Müller-Schott has appeared in concert with such renowned conductors as Marc Albrecht, Thomas Dausgaard, Charles Dutoit,Christoph Eschenbach, Iván Fischer, Alan Gilbert, Gustavo Gimeno, Bernard Haitink, Jakub Hrůša, Pietari Inkinen, Neeme Järvi, Dmitrij Kitajenko, Lorin Maazel, Jun Märkl, Kurt Masur, Andris Nelsons, Gianandrea Noseda, Sakari Oramo, Andrés Orozco Estrada, Vasily Petrenko, Sir André Previn, Michael Sanderling, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Dima Slobodeniouk und Krzysztof Urbański.

At international festivals of music Daniel Müller-Schott is a regular guest. These include the Proms in London, the Schubertiade, Schleswig-Holstein, Rheingau, Schwetzingen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the “Heidelberger Frühling” as well as at the Festival Vancouver and in the US at festivals for example inTanglewood, Ravinia and Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

His recording of the entire Beethoven cycle with Angela Hewitt has been awarded five stars by the LondonDaily Telegraph. Britten’s solo suites under the ORFEO label has been awarded the Diapason d’Or in France. On the occasion of Krzysztof Penderecki‘s 80th birthday Daniel Müller-Schott played the „Concerto Grosso for three cellos and orchestra“ among others with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic and Charles Dutoit.

To kick off the season, there will be concerts with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Charles Dutoit. Daniel Müller-Schott can be experienced as a chamber musician in a trio with Sharon Kam and Enrico Pace as well as with Baiba and Lauma Skride. Duo and solo recitals are arranged in various European cities.

Daniel Müller-Schott plays the “Ex Shapiro” Matteo Goffriller cello, made in Venice in 1727.

L. v. Beethoven Große Fuge, Op.133

Seoul International Music Festival,
A breath-taking revival of a masterpiece

The union of every amplified moment, Shanghai Quartet
‘‘Surprisingly intense and brilliant performance’
Washington Post

A masterpiece is filled with inherent logic and driving force; studying and analyzing such music helps to understand the heart of the composer. The composers featured in this concert, Beethoven and Schumann, are famous for their unparalleled oeuvre as well as their dramatic lives. The life and art of the two virtuosos are condensed in the pieces that we have prepared for this concert.

Our first selection is a piece by Schumann that is considered one of the best quintet works in history. Schumann was the first person to arrange piano and string quartet together, and he interpreted string quartet as a conversation between four people and an interaction between different parts. Following performances feature two pieces of Beethoven’s string quartet, both are famous for being difficult to play, as the color and mood of the music change drastically depending on the performers. Shanghai Quartet and pianist Ilya Rashkovsky will be performing these pieces with passionate musicality and exquisite technique.

The Shanghai Quartet created a sensation through their guest performance at the 2010 and 2012 SIMF, and they are returning for our 10th anniversary festival. Established in 1983, they are a renown orchestra with 35 years of history, appraised one of the best quartets by the critics and the public. They won second place at the Portsmouth International String Quartet Competition (Currently known as the London International Competition), and first prize at the Chicago Discovery Competition. They are known for their silk-like music, delicately interlaced with melody and rhythm. Their sense of completeness and unity forms a new dimension of musical range and a sense of space, inviting the audience to witness union of amplified moments.

Ilya Rashkovsky is a Russian pianist who showed extraordinary talent from a very young age; he started playing piano when he was five, started composing when he was six, and had his first concert with a symphony orchestra when he was eight years old. He won first prize at the Hammamatsu International Piano competition, Citta di Pinerolo competition, International Piano Competition “Premio Jaen”, and the Hong Kong International competition, proving his talent to the world. We believe Rashkovsky’s performance of Schumann’s piano quintet, composed in 1842- ‘the year of chamber music’, with the Shanghai Quartet will be a valuable experience for all, especially because his deep affection for chamber music.

The collaboration of America’s Shanghai Quartet and Russia’s Ilya Rashkovsky goes beyond the political ideology, embodying the aim of Seoul International Music Festival to create a “joy of uniting through music”.

Octet, a large scale chamber music, is especially difficult and requires a high level of personal musicianship, and years of ensemble experiences.

‘Ensemble Opus’ has presented the best stages by inviting some of the world’s best musicians. They are ready to present the best classical music in which ‘life and music are congruent’

Ensemble Opus selected Mendelssohn and Enescu for this late autumn night concert. Mendelssohn was the leading composer of the 19th century romanticism with Schumann, and he pioneered a contemplative romanticism by sublimating German literature in music. His string octet is written in an innovative form that completes the classical form of octet and is also perfect as a sonata form music structure. Mendelssohn’s melodies are exceptionally elegant and beautiful.

Enescu was a renown composer of his time, who wrote pieces based on traditional melody, folk rhythm, and powerful, effective harmony. Enescu, who was a strong patriot, frequently explained that his pieces were about the pride and ego towards his country. Enescu’s octet is known to be one of the more difficult chamber music pieces, but its passionate movement, special melody and impressive harmony create a sensation since the premier.

2018 Seoul International Music Festival Closing Concert
‘Sinfonia Varsovia’

‘… I have never felt as satisfied as when I performed as a soloist and conductor at Sinfonia Varsovia”
Yehudi Menuhin

A true gem; magnificent and noble voices of Grzegorz Nowak, world class conductor,
Miroslav Yanofsky, Choral Master, and the National Chorus all in once place.

The closing concert of 2018 Seoul International Music Festival will be commemorating both the 100소 anniversary of Poland’s independence and the 99th anniversary of the establishment of Republic of Korea with Sinfonia Varsovia and National Chorus. We believe it will be especially meaningful when the music plays on November 11th, the day of Poland’s Independence.

Poland and Korea share similar histories. Poland was invaded by Russia and Germany, and Korea was invaded by Japan and China; both nations rose above the difficult circumstances and achieved peace. This concert celebrates the meeting of two nations, elevating the historical pain through ‘music’.

Seoul International Music Festival has prepared a special repertoire and event, in which London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s life principal conductor, Grzegorz Nowak, the artistic director of National Chorus and the chorus conductor of this concert, Ui-joong Yoon, world-class choral master, Miroslav Yanofsky, opera soprano and winner of 2016 Richard Wagner award, Jennifer Wilson, and leading singers of Korea, Jae-un Beck, and Jae-il Kim comes together in one voice. The audience will be able to experience the peak of human emotion through their masterful harmony.

This concert will be an excellent opportunity for the audience to experience the deep romantic scent of Poland. Sinfonia Varsovia will be playing ‘Sinfonia Da Requiem’, written by Jaejoon Ryu, Korean composer who studied under Poland’s great composers, Karlowicz, Szymanowski, and Penderecki.

Sinfonia Varsovia is a world-known orchestra and they have received prestigious awards including Diapason d’Or, Diapason Decouverte, Grand Prix du Disque and the Polish Fryderyk award- which they won nine times. For this concert, this masterful orchestra aims to deliver the true sentiments of Poland through the sophisticated music of a Polish composer.

The concert will also be filled with the sentiments of Korea. The National Chorus contributes to popularizing and improving the artistic standard of choral music in Korea by creating various repertoires and new performances every year. We have no doubt that the audience will be able to experience their expression of Korea’s unique characteristic, scent and warmth through this concert.
